Bavaria is a perfect paradise for tourists, with its beautiful lakes, the charming nature around the Alps and many towns and villages with magnificent history and traditions. You can travel in all Bavaria region with a special train ticket, called Bavaria ticket. For 2 persons costs 27 euro, for 3 persons 31 euro and for 4 persons 35 euro…So cheap and convenient because there are so many beautiful places to visit and discover.
From München, the capital of Bavaria, there are many possibilities for a one day trip and difficult to choose because there are all so interesting and enchanting. This weekend we decided to go to Königssee, as I’ve heard many things about it and I wanted to see if it’s really as beautiful as it was described by the locals. Well…they were right, and you will se it with your own eyes.
Travelling by train took us 2 hours and 40 minutes to arrive in Berchtesgaden (we change the train once at Freilassing), the most important city from Berchtesgadener Land, one of the most beautiful regions in Germany and whole Europe. Traveling by train in Germany is always a nice experience. Everywhere you look are green meadows, happy horses and cows and traditional bavarian houses. A pleasure to look and enjoy the view.
From the central station in Berchtesgaden 2 special buses (841 and 842) can take you directly to Königssee Everything is very easy and just in front of your eyes, the way germans accustomed us. The tourist is like a king here and they do anything for you to enjoy the time and not worry about how to go where and with what.
Königssee is the highest lake in Germany and it’s famous for its clear water. For this reason, only electric-powered passenger ships, rowing, and pedal boats have been permitted on the lake since 1909. Due to its picturesque setting, the lake and surrounding parklands are very popular with tourists and hikers. I have seen here so many people, from all the world. Till reaching the point for boat trips on the lake, many souvenirs shops and cafes were everywhere, happy faces and a very nice holiday atmosphere. What can you wish for more in a sunny perfect Saturday?
The boat trip can be made till St. Bartholomä (13.90 euro) or further on till Salet and it takes around 2-3 hours, both ways. I can not describe in words how nice was the boat trip and how enchanting is the lake…Silence, beautiful clear turquoise water and the greatness of nature. You just can’t get enough of this view and of what nature has created. One of the most nicely moment of the boat trip was when the boat stopped the motors and in that completely silence, on the crew members played the trumpet…I was amazed by the echo, as you could say that somebody else was responding to our song. Unbelievable
We decided to go only to the central attraction of the lake, the famous pilgrimage church of St. Bartholomä, and it took us around 1 hour and 30 minutes, both ways. As there is no lakeside path on the steep shore of the Königssee, St. Bartholomä and the southern edge can only be reached by boat or via hiking trails up the surrounding mountains. Here, you can find the perfect view of the lake and mountains and it takes your breath away. We spend a couple of hours just walking along the lake, enjoying the perfect view and the warm weather…Joyful people with kids and dogs, all happy by being here and having a perfect weekend and such a lovely place. Souvenirs shops, good bier and traditional food (and also fresh fish), completed the image.
I was so happy being here as it felt like in another world. I wanted to stop the time and enjoy the moment for longer time…
Being back on the ground, we wanted to see the lake also from heights, as I heard its amazing. Said and done. We took the Jennerbahn till 1874 m ( 17-21 euro for one person both ways) and expecting a great moment. But…as I am already used…german weather is very tricky and rainy. On our way to the magnificent view (only 200 m from the bahn) it started to drop and a lot of grey clouds gathering. When we reached the point, everything was already so cloudy that no lake could be seen I felt so bad, as I really wanted to see this and we were so high in the sky…In 10 minutes, the weather become windy and increasingly worse, so we had to leave immediately. When we reached the bahn to take it back, outside was storm. Raining like hell, thunders and lightnings…everything was a big dark cloud. The bahn didn’t work for more than an hour and we faced the danger to remain there, at 1800 m.
Thank God, finally, we managed to descend. It was raining also in the city and it was clear for us the day was over…It almost 6 o’clock and we were heading back to train, and home. We were planning to visit also the famous Salt mine from Berchtesgaden, but because of the storm…no more time. We were tired anyway and happy with what we saw and the fact that we were going to sleep in our own bed
It was such a wonderful day! Enjoy the photos, lovely friends.
